October 10th at Canandaigua. Our older guys did it. They won the 7th Annual Fleet Feet Sports Relay: 50 Miles Around the Lake.
Ted Thull recruited a strong team to go after the both the Veterans record and hopefully win overall. Under the rules of the relay, a Veteran team has to have an average age of 50 or greater. Ted put together a mix of guys approaching 50 and over 50 for an average age of 51.6: Ted Thull, 48; Frank Goetz, 52; Howard Reitz, 52; Mark Barry, 57; and Tony Machulskis, 49.
On race day, the GRTC Veterans were near the lead from the start. By the second handoff at 13 miles, they had begun pulling away and it was clear that their only competition was going to be the clock. With each man running two relay legs, they kept pushing and covered the hilly 50 miles around the lake in 5:29:04 (6:35 average pace). This mark broke the previous Veterans record by over an hour and is the 6th best time in the history of the event.
