August Trail News Clover Street Ramp. As reported previously, the steep set of stairs at Lock 32 in Pittsford is being replaced by a gradual ramp. I went by the site on July 21st and 31st to check on progress. The two photos below were taken from Clover Street and show the current state of the work. As you can see from the photos, a concrete box has been placed on the ramp to both stabilize the bank and to provide access over the ramp to Clover Street. A lot of work remains to be done on this project. At this time, it looks as though the work may not be completed before the Rochester Marathon.
Cobb’s Lane Trail Relocation. The latest news from the Perinton Department of Public Works is that the current work relocating about a quarter mile of canal trail along Cobb's Lane will be completed this year. The relocation of the remainder of Cobb’s Lane (the section closest to Turk Hill Road) will be done next summer. The pedestrian bridge connecting the canal trail with the Perinton Hikeway-Bikeway will not be started until late next year. The canal will have to be drained before the bridge work can be done. Parkway Trail. Construction is continuing on a 2.8-mile, multi-use trail along the north side of the Lake Ontario State Parkway from Island Cottage Road east to Latta Road. Trail Town USA You’ve undoubtedly seen the license plate frames and welcoming signs heralding Perinton as Trail Town USA. Perhaps like me, you’ve wondered what that designation is all about. Here’s the story. The American Hiking Society introduced Trail Town USA to acknowledge places working toward the goals of Trails for All Americans, a plan to bring trails to within 15 minutes of every American's home or workplace. The American Hiking called for the nation's trail towns to step forward and be recognized for their efforts to make trails an intricate part of their communities. Towns possessing exemplary trail systems were asked to nominate themselves for Trail Town USA status. In 1996 the Crescent Trail Association nominated the Town of Perinton. Association volunteers prepared a 3,000 word essay describing the Town's three interconnecting recreationways – the Erie Canal Heritage Trail, the Perinton Hikeway-Bikeway (RS&E Trolley Trail), and the Crescent Trail network of footpaths – their history, and how they benefit the community. Perinton’s application was ranked 8th out of the 30 communities recognized in 1996. All 30 towns received signs to place at their trial heads, announcing their status as a Trail Town USA. |
