I just returned from St. Louis, where I was visiting my daughter and contemplating running the St. Louis Track Club's "Frostbite Series" Half Marathon in Forest Park. The evening before the race, St.Louis experienced freezing rain and roads, walkways, etc were treacherous, with black ice everywhere. Cold temps remained through the night and race morning and race organizers assumed that city's salt trucks would adequately take care of the park roads before the race and declared that the race "was still on". Some of us decided not to risk it because sidewalks and parking lots were still disasters waiting to happen, even if the roads were runnable. However, many others trusted the decision of race organizers (despite indications that the roads had not been salted adequately) and ran. I am now reading on the St. Louis Track Club's Facebook page about the many people who fell and some who suffered significant enough injuries (including head trauma) to require emergency medical care. The SLTC apologized on their website and FB page, however, I thought that we could all learn something from hearing about this experience.
